Seamlines from The President
Hello, and Happy Summer!
I am starting this month with a note from National: effective immediately, they will no longer send membership renewal notices in the mail! You will need to be very proactive in monitoring your expiration date for renewals as well as printing your membership card from the on-line portal. We have additional information contained in this newsletter and you are always welcome to reach out to your Neighborhood Group leader, our chapter’s Membership Chair or myself for assistance with any problems you may encounter.
Summer is supposed to be filled with lazy days and quiet evenings. Not so this summer! To follow up with a note from February, I have been working on quilts! Yup, on these 90 degree days I have been working on the graduation quilt for my niece and have 3 of 5 baby quilts done for the family. These are fun projects and completing them gives a sense of accomplishment. Mom’s legacy is still with us.
As we move through the summer months we turn our attention to the local fair. I enjoy going to a county fair and seeing what the young people do. We Minnesotans are quite the talented group and we enjoy passing down our traditions and creativity to the next generation. This leads me to noting that the MN State Fair is less than 40 days away! Are your entries ready? Our Chapter is once again taking advantage of the opportunity to showcase our activities and share with fairgoers how we Advance Sewing as an Art and Life Skill. Please join us for 3 days talking all things sewing to people from across the state, country and even from around the world. I often feel like I am sitting on the porch swapping stories of past sewists and passing on tidbits of things I learned to the next generations. I even learned a tip or trick myself. The stories usually start, “I remember Grandma/Mom/Auntie making all of my…..”
On the heels of the Fair, we turn our attention to our month of Community Service Sewing, Sew 4 One, Sew For All. Community Service Sewing is not just limited to one day once per year. We seem to be community-oriented people, so when the neighbor needs a special button to repair some jeans, a piece of fabric to finish a school project, asks if we can repair a seam or needs help repairing a zipper so the jacket can be donated to a shelter, we step forward. It is who we are and quietly we support our community doing good things all throughout the year. Thank you for all you do to support our communities.
Fall will bring us to the annual meeting and election of officers. I have served 2 terms as your president. I have enjoyed getting to know you and learning about your interests and skills. I learned something from you at every meeting or gathering we have. The time has come when I need to step aside and focus on some other issues in my life. I encourage each of you to consider giving back to the Guild by stepping into a leadership role. You will be working with a great group of people who share your passion for sewing, thus making the role you choose fun and easy!
This issue of the newsletter is packed full of information for the many activities we have coming up. Sew, pour yourself a cool beverage as you catch up on the activities of ASG-Minneapolis-St Paul Chapter!
Regards,
Eileen Scott, President
