Most of my sewing projects have been put on hold while I've been busy with other life events. At the beginning of June, I had cataract surgery on both eyes, and I have to say I was absolutely blown away by the results. Everything looks so vibrant and crystal clear now, especially the trees and flowers around our house. I never realized just how much I had been missing!
Doug and I also made a trip down to Texas to help Mom with a few projects around her farm that she is no longer able to tackle herself. Doug was put in charge of cutting trees, cleaning up, and making repairs to the barn, while I helped hang the valance I had made for her several months ago. It was a wonderful visit, and we decided to take the scenic route through the Ozarks on our way down. The scenery was absolutely beautiful, and I'm so glad we took the extra time to enjoy a little sightseeing along the way.
Now that I'm back home, I'm ready to dive into some sewing projects again. That means pattern alterations—not exactly my favorite part of sewing! However, I've realized a few things that make the process much more successful. The biggest lesson was learning to be honest with myself about my measurements and to include the amount of ease the pattern calls for. Taking the time to do the math, determining how much needs to be added to each seam, make the alter-ations, and sewing a test garment has made a huge difference. That honesty is really the key to achieving a better fit right from the start.
Now, I'm working on a simple blouse pattern. I've always wanted a basic blouse that fits well, but so far, I haven't quite managed to achieve it. I'm hopeful that this time, by following my own advice and being honest with the meas-urements, I'll finally end up with the blouse I've been looking for. Fingers crossed! I'll be sure to keep you posted on how it turns out.
